Parul Begum’s Vermi-compost Success in Kismatpur SACP

Parul Begum’s Vermi-compost Success in Kismatpur

Parul Begum and her husband, Rashid Khandakar, residents of Kismatpur village in the Kakrabunia block, of Mirzaganj upazilla of Patuakhali exemplify the transformative power of sustainable farming. As members of the Smallholder Agricultural Competitiveness Project (SACP-RAINS) farmer’s group, they initiated a vermi-compost venture that has grown into a thriving business, supporting both their family and the broader agricultural community.

The Beginning

In 2021, with the support and technical advice of the local Upazila Agriculture Officer, Parul and Rashid set up their first vermi-compost plant with just three beds. They began by cultivating vegetables and high-value crops, using vermi-compost as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. The nutrient-rich compost not only improved soil health but also significantly increased their crop yields.

Expansion and Growth:

As their farm flourished, so did their reputation. Parul and Rashid’s vermi-compost became known for its high quality, leading other farmers to seek their product. Within a short period, they had sold vermi-compost worth 60,000 BDT to other local farmers. Their compost beds grew from 3 to 12, as they scaled their production to meet the growing demand.

Parul received innovative farming tools and packaging materials, including bags, provided by the

Impact on Family and Livelihood

The income from vermi-compost sales and their farm’s increased productivity significantly improved their family’s financial stability. The additional revenue helped them cover household expenses, including supporting their child who has secured employment. The couple credits their success to the use of organic, eco-friendly farming methods.

A key aspect of this success story is Parul Begum’s active involvement in managing the vermi-compost plant. When her husband Rashid is away, Parul takes full charge of running the operation, showcasing her leadership and commitment. Her hands-on approach and dedication ensure that the plant operates smoothly, and the compost produced is of the highest quality.

The couple’s success has had a ripple effect across their community. Their story has inspired many farmers in Kismatpur and beyond to start vermicompost production, seeing the benefits of using organic fertilizer in crop cultivation. Parul and Rashid are now widely recognized as leaders in the community for their contribution to sustainable farming, helping to educate and provide resources to other farmers by sharing plants, compost, and valuable farming insights.

Parul and Rashid’s success can be attributed, in part, to the support provided by the SACP-RAINS project. The initiative has helped farmers like them cultivate high-value crops, adopt innovative farming techniques, and increase their income. Their story represents the broader success of the SACP-RAINS project in empowering smallholder farmers, promoting sustainable farming practices.

Parul Begum and Rashid Khandakar’s story is a powerful example of. how sustainable agricultural practices can transform lives. Through their hard work, innovative farming methods, and the support of the SACP-RAINS project, they have not only improved their own livelihood but also inspired a generation of farmers to pursue eco-friendly and profitable farming solutions
